Woefull Rovers put themselves back in trouble

A woefull performance from Tranmere saw them lose for the second time in their last four away games as Brian Little was made to pay for his negative tactics.

After winning comfortably 3-0 last week, Brian Little changed the formation from 4-3-3 to 5-3-2, bringing Ian Goodison into the starting XI as a replacement for the ill Jason McAteer.

Phil Palethorpe was on the bench along with Sam Aiston, Danny Harrison, Steve Davies and Carl Tremarco, meaning Mike Jones who had travelled with the team was left out of the 16.

Rotherham piled on the pressure from the kick-off. Forte and Quinn both went close but Forte's shot was held by Steve Wilson whilst Quinn struck wide.

On 17-minutes Rovers had their first shot. Calvin Zola picked up the ball just inside the Rotherham half from a Greenacre pass and after carrying the ball forward he shot over the bar by some distance.

Whilst taking the shot Zola injured himself and was soon bemusingly replaced by Danny Harrison who played in midfield when Brian Little should have made a like for like change and brought on Steven Davies. The decision not to bring Davies on quite possibly cost Rovers the game.

The next real opportunity came on 31 minutes, falling to Steven Jennings. Cutler was left out of his goal by some distance after mis-kick and the ball fell to Jennings who hit first time just wide and over.

On 41-minutes Danny Harrison had an effort but his shot went wide and there was to be no repeat of the fixture back on 2nd January when Harrison scored.

At half time it was 0-0, probably a result that such an awful game deserved. Niether side made any half time changes so it was all set to be the same after the interval.

After just 20 seconds of the second half, The Millers had a penalty. Forte, on loan from Sheffield United, broke down the Rotherham left and tried to cross but the ball me the hand of Mike Jackson. Although I doubt it was deliberate hand ball, Jackson's arm was in the air and it was a penalty.

Step up Lee Williamson to take the penalty, who struck low to Wilson's right. But Wilson pulled off a fantastic save, tipping the ball round the post and bringing around a reaction from the Rovers fans as if they had scored.

7 Minutes later Wilson was too pull off another save, this time from Shaun Barker, as Wilson got down well to save, sending the Rovers fans into a chorus of "Easy, Easy" and "England's Number One" chants.

Soon after David Raven registered Tranmere's only shot of the half, but the Tranmere-Fan could only watch as his shot was deflected wide of the post for a corner.

On 73-minutes Rotherham finally took the lead. After a goal mouth scramble from a corner, substitute Barker volleyed past Wilson who had no chance to put the Millers 1-0 up and start the Tranmere fans calling for Little to bring on Sam Aiston or Steve Davies.

However, this didn't happen until too late. By the time either of the two named above came on, it was 2-0 to Rotherham.

David Raven, one of Rovers better players on the day, lost the ball on the half way line to Forte. Forte broke free and crossed to Shaw who shot. Steve Wilson made a fantastic save but the ball only fell to Shaw who after handling put the ball in the back of the net off his knee.

It was only now that Aiston and Davies came on. Bit too late really Brian considering it was obvious Rotherham were going to score one, two or even three goals the way they were dominating the game.

Needless to say Rovers had no chances in the remaining minutes of the game but Mike Jackson and Mike Keane oth saw red after a scuffle in the centre circle where each players threw a punch.

This is a disgrace for Jackson particually. I'm sure you will agree that as a seasoned professional of 32, Jackson should be able to keep his temper and not be throwing punches, especially as he is club captain. He will now serve a three game ban when Rovers are in need.

The game finished 2-0 to the Millers meaning Rovers still haven't won at Millmoor in 30 years since the 1975/76 season. Hopefully they won't have to go there again however as it wasn't a particually brilliant ground nor surrounding area.

Brian Little's tactics quite possibly cost Rovers the game. He yet again played for a draw and Rovers unsurprisingly lost the game, just like Oldham. When will he learn that at least if we play attacking football we will score goals which might give us the chance to win.

Jones' Man Of The Match: Although Ian Sharps had a reasonably solid game at Centre back, Steve Wilson wins the award this week hands down. A very good performance in goal when he could do nothing about the goals, made some great saves, kicked well and pulled a top drawer penalty save out of the bag.
