Tranmere 1-1 Notts County- Match Report

Welsh late show rescues Rovers

A John Welsh goal in the third minute of injury time rescued a point for Tranmere as a close encounter against Notts County at Prenton Park finished 1-1.

Rovers, on Ronnie Moore's return as manager, made the worst possible start. Ian Goodison needlessly gave away a fifth-minute corner and Jon Harley's cross was hooked home at the far post by Damion Stewart.

It was nearly 2-0 in the 12th minute but Owain Fon Williams did well to deny Jonathan Forte.

James Wallace fired marginally off target as Tranmere rallied and shortly before the break Notts goalkeeper Stuart Nelson saved with his legs as Goodison tried to make amends for his early error. Nelson also did well to keep out a Lucas Akins header two minutes into the second half.

At the other end, Jeff Hughes went close with a 52nd-minute free-kick.

Danny Holmes was inches away from an equaliser after 69 minutes but Welsh did level things up at the death when he headed in from a Holmes corner.
