Rovers remain undefeated against Yeovil

First Tranmere goals for Kevin Ellison and John Mullin secured Rovers a second successive home win on a Saturday for the first time since November/December 2004, when Swindon and MK Dons were defeated 2-1 and 2-0 by the Rovers.

Rovers named the same side that picked up a point at Belle Vue against Doncaster Rovers (0-0) the previous Saturday, with Ian Goodison passing a late fitness test to play for Rovers.

It was the home side who started the brighter, with a Gareth Taylor first miss-hitting a shot which went for a corner and then forcing Town goalkeeper Mildenhall into a save with a header, but he was unfortunatly offside.

On 11 minutes, Yeovil had their first chance of the game, as Chris Cohen's 20-yard drive was easily saved by Gavin Ward.

Ward was forced into two more saves infront of the visiting fans, as Yeovil were forced to shoot from distance due to solid Rovers defending.

On 35-minutes, Rovers took the lead after a stunning counter attack. Chris Greenacre collected the ball in midfield and slid a wonderfully weighted pass through to Kevin Ellison.

The former Chester player ran onto the pass and after two or three touches, shot from just outside the penalty area, netting under the Yeovil 'keeper.

Minutes later, Ellison headed over from a Shuker corner, when had he left the ball, Gareth Taylor was well placed and would have probably hit the target for close range.

However, just minutes before half time, Cohen netted a sickly equaliser for Yeovil, when by all accounts, they were being out played by Rovers.

Kevin James slipped a ball in from the right, which was met by Chris Cohen, who vollied low past the diving Gavin Ward, leaving the scores level at half time.

On 48-minutes, Jason McAteer came on for Rovers, replacing the injured Paul McClaren, who looks set to miss the mid-week league cup tie at Hull. However, the substitute changed the game, as McAteer sprayed passes all around the park, giving Yeovil little chance of getting the ball when he had it.

On 54 minutes, John Mullin netted his first Tranmere goal and the goal that would eventually see Rovers secure the three points.

A Stockdale and Shuker 1-2 went wrong, but the ball fell to John Mullin who advanced into the penalty area and fired in a well placed shot out of the reach of Mildenhall and into the bottom corner.

With Gavin Ward in top form in the Rovers goal, Yeovil were un;ikely to score a goal. The experienced shot-stopped got down well to save a Chris McCady sliced clearence, before producing the save of the season so far, tipping a Kalala shot onto the post from point blank range.

Chris Greenacre twice squandered that chance to increase Rovers' lead, once shooting straight at Mildenhall and then hitting the post in the 86th minute, whilst Robbie Stockdale also saw an effort blocked by the Yeovil keeper.

On 86-minutes, Shane Cansdell-Sherriff flicked on a corner into the net off the cross-bar, but the goal was ruled out, what appeared some what harshly, by the referee for pushing.

Gareth Taylor had the last chance of the match, putting a header into the side netting, to the amusement of the travelling Yeovil fans after some of the Borough Road Stand cheared.

However, Ronnie Moore can only be happy with the teams performance. Claims from older fans that the team is shaping up like John King's side of the late 1980's are fantastic, and show that the team is going somewhere.

Moore asked for goals, and indeed two of them were scored, although in all honesty, Rovers could have had four or five!

Jones' Man Of The Match: Whilst Gareth Taylor won every header and Gavin Ward was superb in goal for Rovers, Ian Goodison once again shone in the heart of the Rovers defence. The Jamaican international never missed a tackle and was superb throughout, showing the Rovers faithful what he can do when played at centre-back.
