Rovers close play-off gap

Last updated : 30 January 2008 By Matthew Jones
Tranmere Rovers moved to within one point of the final play-off place thanks to a 2-0 win over Gillingham in League One at Prenton Park tonight.

Ronnie Moore selected exactly the same 16 from Saturday's win over Yeovil Town, with Paul McLaren recovering enough to take his place in the same starting XI as Saturday's match.

Again, it didn't take long for Tranmere to open the scoring, as they took the lead with their first attack on seven minutes.

Rovers won a corner on the left which was played short by Jennings to McLaren. McLaren recieved the ball just inside the area and after controlling the ball with his first touch, he fired home into the top corner.

Tranmere almost doubled their lead just a few moments later with Taylor heading Sherriff's cross over before a Myrie-Williams shot after a long, mazey run deflected harmlessly wide.

However, two minutes later Tranmere got their second goal as Calvin Zola scored in his second consecutive match for the first time since December 2005 [Zola scored first in a 4-1 defeat to Brentford and then in the 4-1 win over Yeovil. Although there was a game inbetween these fixtures - a 0-0 draw with Walsall - , Zola wasn't involved.]

Myrie-Williams beat his man on the right wing and when it appeared he had been fouled, the ball fell to Zola with the referee playing an excellent advantage. Zola won the ball from Simon King and shot with his weaker left foot from near the D, curling the ball low into the bottom left hand corner and leaving 'keeper Royce rooted to the spot.

A few minutes later Myrie-Williams saw another effort curl wide before Zola won the ball on the left and came in field before firing an inaccurate right-footed shot high and wide.

On 29-minutes Zola had another chance as he put the ball wide following what appeared to be a foul on Taylor before Jennings put a weak and low effort straight at Royce from the edge of the area just after the half hour mark.

Tranmere were piling on the pressure and as a result Danny Coyne didn't have a save to make in the first half as the home side went in search of a third, killer goal, most likely with last season's result against the same opposition fresh in the mind when Rovers surrendered an early 2-0 lead to lose 3-2 at Prenton Park.

On 35-minutes, Tranmere came close to scoring what would have been a terrific goal. The side patiently built up a move, with the ball being passed across the midfield and back towards the defence before Andy Taylor made a surging run down the left, playing a neat one-two with Jennings in the process.

The new-signing played in an excellent low-cross from near the goal-line which went across the face of the six yard box and had to be cleared by the Gillingham defender, just before it reached Calvin Zola who was ready to pounce.

On 41-minutes, the shock of all shocks came as Robbie Stockdale nearly scored. After over-lapping Myrie-Williams on the right, Stockdale found himself in the penalty area and, under pressure from the Gillingham defender, shot towards the near post only to put the ball into the side netting.

The final action of a half completely dominated by the home side once again came from Rovers, as Calvin Zola came close to a third Tranmere goal.

Zola, who had been the most threatening Tranmere player, brought the ball down in the area and, with his back to goal, he vollied an acrobatic effort on the turn just wide of the post.

Tranmere then went in at the interval two goals up and looking comfortable, and, as promised, Ronnie Moore sent his players out early from the break to get them concentrating on the 45 minutes ahead.

After half-time, Gillingham pushed forward a bit more as they looked slightly more threatening when shooting towards their own fans.

Mulligan had two weak efforts in the first five minutes after the re-start, with his first effort saved somewhat easily by Coyne before his second effort came much closer as he beat his marker to the ball and sent a glancing header just wide of Coyne's right hand post.

Six minutes later, Steven Jennings saw a shot deflected wide for a corner before, from the resulting set-piece, the ball landed freely at the near post and remained there for a couple of seconds before it was eventually cleared.

Gillingham though were beginning to threaten Danny Coyne's goal more, as Griffiths saw his shot from the edge of the area deflected wide whilst shortly after the hour mark, Gareth Taylor was unlucky to see his flick-on header drift just over the cross-bar from inside the six-yard box as he connected with Jennings' corner.

Rovers won a free-kick on 71-minutes after a foul on Gareth Taylor, and although Myrie-Williams got the set-piece on target, it was too close to goalkeeper Royce who comfortably saved as he moved to his left.

On 77 and 79 minutes, Ronnie Moore made two substitutions in midfield, as Steven Jennings was first replaced by John Mullin who continues his return from injury before Craig Curran was brought on for Jennison Myrie-Williams on the right-wing, with both players probably brought off with Satuday's important trip to Leeds in mind.

Niether had much effect on the game though, as the final 15 minutes saw very little goal mouth action, although Gillingham saw a lot more of the ball.

In the end, it was a comfortable win for Tranmere against a Gillingham side who looked very poor on the night, and it was not difficult to work out why they had lost nine of thirteen away league games before travelling to the Wirral.

Tranmere could have had many more on the night, but the likes of Zola and Myrie-Williams missed chances to extend Tranmere's lead and put Gillingham well out of the game.

However, the win means Rovers have banished their poor run of form on Tuesday nights and also stretched their run to three consecutive wins ahead of their trip to Leeds on Saturday.

Rovers never looked like losing on the night and rarely had their goal threatened.  Indeed, they have only conceeded once in that run of three wins with the defence looking a lot better since the return of Ian Goodison.

With the likes of Leeds, Carlisle and Brighton losing whilst Leyton Orient, Walsall and Nottingham Forest only drawing onthe night, it made Rovers result even more important.

They now go into Saturday's game at Elland Road just one point and two places behind Leeds, who lie sixth, whilst Rovers in eighth are now just four points behind second placed Doncaster.  This alone illustrates how close Coca-Cola League One is this season.

Jones' Man of the Match:  Jennison Myrie-Williams was a threat last night, but he wasn't as effective as recent weeks as he often failed to look up and play the ball too late.  McLaren was very effective in midfield though, as he looked a lot fitter than Saturday and controlled the midfield with some excellent passing as well as displaying some skill at times.  My man of the match for tonight though was Calvin Zola.  He could have had a hatrick, if not more, on the night, but he was impressive nonetheless, scoring a great goal and being a constant threat to the Gillingham defence all night, chasing down every lose ball and winning a lot in the air as well as holding up play well.
