Alan Dunne bagged a brace for Millwall as a four-goal thriller at the Den ended in a stalemate that did little for either side's promotion prospects.

Shane Sherriff put Rovers ahead with nine minutes on the clock, but Dunne was set up twice by in-form Derby loanee Ryan Smith, before Calvin Zola grabbed the equaliser.

Millwall had enjoyed the better of the early exchanges and when Smith cut inside Sherriff to blast over before creating an inviting opportunity for Poul Hubertz, the Lions looked firm favourites to draw first blood.

But with nine minutes gone Paul McLaren floated in a free-kick to the unmarked Sherriff, freeing the Rovers left-back to drive the ball past Lenny Pidgeley from six yards.

Millwall manager Willie Donachie responded by switching Smith to the left wing, with Marvin Williams moving to the opposite flank.

The change proved an astute one, Williams flicking a Dave Brammer pass narrowly wide before spurning a superb curling cross from Smith as the Lions fought for an equaliser.

Having finished the first half strongly, Millwall, boosted by the half-time introduction of the returning Darren Byfield, were quickly level after the interval.

Smith, now stationed on the right, cut inside to deliver a crisp pass into the path of Dunne, who drilled home from just inside the area.

Their tails up, Millwall went ahead with just over 20 minutes remaining, Smith once again setting up Dunne on the edge of the box.

But barely had Dunne's shot nestled in the back of Ward's net before Tranmere were level again, McLaren finding Zola who made no mistake from 12 yards.

A frantic finish saw both Rovers midfielder Danny Harrison and Lions front man Hubertz squander chances to snatch the three points.
