Doncaster Rovers had the edge against one of the teams tipped for promotion but defences definitely stayed on top throughout this encounter.

Neither side was able to capitalise on the few chances created with Ian Sharps a tower of strength in the Tranmere defence.

The pattern was set in the second minute when Doncaster midfielder John Doolan had a low shot blocked and Tim Ryan hit the rebound just wide.

Jason McAteer was generally disappointing in midfield for the visitors but picked out centre forward Eugene Dadi in the fifth minute only to see him plant a powerful header inches wide.

Paul Green had a low 20-yard effort well saved by John Achterberg a minute later before the home side had a lucky escape when a downward header from Dadi was cleared off the line by Ryan following a corner.

Doncaster had much the better of the first half but were denied again on the stroke of half time when Gregg Blundell had a shot saved by Achterberg's leg after the impressive James Coppinger had created the opening.

Tranmere boss Brian Little made a couple of substitutions at the start of the second half and switched to a more attacking formation.

But Calvin Zola blasted high and wide after Danny Harrison had sent him racing through straight after the restart.

Leo Fortune-West struck a good chance just past the post in the 53rd minute before Zola sent a header from close range just over the bar at the other end.

Achterberg did well to save a superb angled volley from Green in the 59th minute and Doncaster were out of luck again when Ryan rattled the crossbar with a thundering 20-yard strike in the 75th minute.

McAteer missed a great chance to pinch victory three minutes from time but overall a draw was a fair result.
