Starting in England with Port Vale in 1998, the central-midfielder enjoyed a four-year spell with the Valients before returning to Ireland with Cork City in 2002.
Making 150 appearances for Cork and winning a number of personal and team medals, O'Callaghan returned to England on January 1st 2007 when he signed for Ipswich.
However, at Portman Road his career didn't kick-on, as he struggled to get into the team and spent six months of last season out on-loan at Brighton and Hove Albion.
After failing to agree personal terms with Brighton, O'Callaghan returned to Cork in January 2008, and it is from Cork that Tranmere have signed the player on a free-transfer.
The 28-year old is a charastmatic midfielder, who is able to shoot with both feet and drift forward into attacking positions.

Standing at 6'3, the 26-year old could be the ideal replacement for Calvin Zola, who has joined Crewe, as Rovers are in need of a target man who will hold the ball up.
Both players have signed two-year contracts with the club and join Eddie Sonko and Gareth Edds as new signings at Prenton Park this summer.
