Watched for no apparent reason by Liverpool and England star Steven Gerrard, Tranmere Rovers and Accrington Stanley's reserves sides played out a dull 0-0 draw at Prenton Park last night.
Rovers fielded a strong side, as Mike Jones, Adnan Ahmed, Carl Tremarco, Paul Henry and Danny Holmes all started in the XI, with Terry Gornell, already on three goals for the season, leading the line with Mike Blundell upfront.
Each side had a chances to open the scoring in the first half but often shooting was wayward. Shane McWeeny was called into action in the first twenty minutes as he made an excellent save from a Accrington header from point blank range, pushing the ball to safety, whilst for Tranmere Ahmed and Jones both fired shots wide or over the goal.
After 22-minutes Tranmere suffered an injury blow as Aaron Cresswell was carried off by Les Parry and John Achterberg, replaced by midfielder Ryan Fraughen on the left-wing.
The second half was similar to the first, although good skill from Jones had the Stanley defence in all kinds of trouble at times, although often he held on to the ball for too long and was eventually tackled.
Rovers had the best of the second period though and it was them who looked most likely to win the game, Fraughen hitting the side netting whilst Gornell drew Dunbavin into saves on a couple of occassions.
Soon after the 70-minute mark Rovers did have the ball in the net, however it was ruled out for being offside. Mike Blundell tapped in from Terry Gornell's cross, however Gornell was ruled offside, as he had been all night as he ran on to Ryan Fraughen's ball over the top.
