The Managerial Situation

After his shock sacking by Morecambe today, former Tranmere Rovers and Ireland midfielder Jimmy Harvey is being linked with the vacant Tranmere Rovers managerial position.

After suffering a serious heart attack in November, Harvey was replaced as manager at Morecambe, but only temporarily, by former Northern Ireland manager Sammy McIlroy. However, today McIlroy has been installed as permanent manager and Harvey sacked after a 12 year reign as Morcambe manager.

In 1994, Harvey was appointed Morecambe manager and in his first season as manager he got Morecambe promoted to the Nationwide Conference after a 2nd place finish in the Northern Premier Division.

In 1997/98, Harvey claimed Morecambe another trophy, as The Shrimps won the Bob Lord trophy after a two-legged final against Woking.

On the final game of the 2004/05 season, Harvey's Morecambe side missed out on the Nationwide Conference on the final game of the season and then later that year on 12th November, Harvey suffered his serious heart attack which has kept him out of the game ever since.

Harvey was once a former, well respected, Rovers player. Signing for £25,000 from Wrexham in 1987, Harvey went on to make 141 appearences for the club in midfield, scoring 15 goals before moving on to Dario Gradi's Crewe Alexandra.

Rumours are strong that Harvey will be appointed the new boss at Tranmere by the end of the week and I'm sure many Tranmere fans would be happy with the appointment.

Other names recently linked with the job are former Liverpool player and Blackpool and Perth Glory boss, Steve McMahon (brother of Rovers coach John), along with the successful manager Mark Stimson who has left Grays Athletic today and former Gillingham and Burnley boss Stan Ternant.
