The Christmas Period

Tonight, Tranmere Rovers begin what is surely the most important part of the season for them so far. Within the space of 12 days, they play five games, with Crewe (tonight - 19/12/06), Gillingham and Rotherham all set to make the trip to Prenton Park, whilst Rovers travel to Huddersfield Town and Nottingham Forest.

Ronnie Moore and Tranmere will be keen to impress and move up the League One table during this important period. There are 15 points up for grabs, and with now a nearly fully fit squad, Tranmere will hoping to pick up atleast 12 points from those available.

Should Rovers beat Crewe tonight, they will move up at least one place in the League One table, ahead of Oldham United by three points. Depending on how many goals they score, they could also move ahead of Scunthorpe United who lie third after their defeat to Blackpool on Friday night.

Gillingham then travel to The Wirral on Saturday 23 Decemeber, another game which Tranmere will be hoping to win after The Gills only drew with struggling Bournemouth at Priestfield last weekend (1-1).

Then comes the most difficult games of the period, as Tranmere make two consecutive away trips to Huddersfield (Boxing Day) and Nottingham Forest (30 December).

Huddersfield have struggled so far this season under Peter Jackson after they missed out on promotion last season following defeat to Barnsley in the play-off semi-finals.

Meanwhile Nottm Forest have been brilliant so far this season under new boss Colin Calderwood and they are quite rightly top of the League One table.

However, Tranmere will be able to gain confidence from the fact that three teams have traveled to The City Ground this season and won so far, with Oldham, Scunthorpe and surprisingly Leyton Orient all leaving Nottingham with three points.

Last season, Rovers were unlucky to lose 1-0 in Nottingham, with Garerth Taylor scoring the only goal of the game for the Tricky Tree's during one of Tranmere's many bad runs last season. This season, they will be hoping for a much better result, and even a draw would be good.

The fifth and final game in this hectic period is against Rotherham United, who have so far had a brilliant season under Alan Knill.

After being docked 10 points before the season even started for going into administration, Rotherham moved out of the relegation zone in October and a 2-1 win over Tranmere in September moved them on to -1 points. Indeed, had The Millers started on 0 points, they would be around the play-off region and challanging for promotion.

The next five games are indeed of huge important, as the Christmas period so often shapes a teams season and gives them that extra imputus to go on and win promotion or avoid relegation.

As long as Tranmere pick up nine points from their three home games and then atleast two from their two away games, I'm sure Ronnie Moore will be very happy.

Over the Christmas period last season, Tranmere went unbeaten under Brian Little, as they drew with Walsall before beating Yeovil, Port Vale and Rotherham. Ronnie Moore will be looking for a repeat this time round.
