Rovers handed tricky away tie
Tranmere Rovers have been handed a tricky away tie in the first round of the 2008/09 Carling Cup, as they will travel to Blundell Park where they will take on League Two opposition Grimsby Town.

In the last three seasons, Rovers have been knocked out of the competition at the first round stage by clubs from all three Coca-Cola leagues, firstly losing to Scunthorpe in 2005/06 (League One), then in Ronnie Moore's first season in charge, Championship side Hull City before being knocked out to a late Matty McNiel winner at Stockport (League Two last season). It's noticable then that all of Tranmere's last three League Cup matches have been away from home and this game is no exception.

The match will be played in the week commencing August 11th and will therefore once again be the second fixture of the season, with the League due to kick off on August 9th.

Other notable draws include an away trip for F.A. Cup runners up Cardiff to Bournemouth, Wycombe Wanderers hosting Birmingham City, Chester City playing Leeds United at the Deva Stadium and a Yorkshire derby between Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham.

Tranmere will be hoping that they can have a repeat of their only previous League Cup match against Grimsby, when they won 4-1 in 1993, whislt hopefully they will also go on a similar League Cup run to the one enjoyed in that year, when Rovers reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Aston Villa.

Former Tranmere Rovers utillity man Gary Jones could meet his old club for this first time since leaving in this match for Grismby.
