Goal Drought

Last updated : 25 July 2005 By Matthew Jones
So far in pre-season, Tranmere have played Vauxhall Motors, Cammel Lairds, Connah's Quay, Manchester City, Marine, Morecambe and Shrewsbury Town. Tranmere failed to score against three of the teams above, losing 1-0 to Cammel Lairds and drawing 0-0 with both of Shrewsbury Town and Morecambe.

So whats with the goal drought? We have five very able strikers I would have thought in Calvin Zola, Iain Hume, Eugene Dadi, Chris Dagnall and new signing Chris Greenacre, you would have thought they would have atleast managed one goal between them in those three games? However, not only is that not the case, but these five have only managed five goals between them in pre-season full stop. Three goals from Eugene Dadi (two against Marine and one against Vauxhalls) with Iain Hume and Chris Greenacre getting the other two goals in the 4-1 win.

I think I can lay my finger on one of the problems which has led to this goal drought. Having sold Ryan Taylor and seen Paul Hall sign for Walsall, Rovers now have no first-team player who is a good crosser of the ball. Therefore, these strikers are not getting the service which they got last year (which was not even particually good as it should have been anyway!).
Another problem could be the fact that Chris Greenacre is a new signing and has therefore not settled, whilst Calvin Zola has not had much first team action because of his work permit issues last season. However, this would not excuse Iain Hume, Eugene Dadi and Chris Dagnall.

Whatever the problem is, the strikers simply haven't scored enough goal's pre-season and must therefore either strive to score more or risk losing their place, as a new signing for the strike force looks unlikely.
