Unibond First Division Feb Half Term Report

Last Updated : 08-Feb-2001 by
Surprise packages Vauxhall Motors (pictured) hold a slight advantage over second placed Bradford PA courtesy of their two games in hand and extra point.

The Motormen’s meteoric rise to prominence has been one of the fairytale stories of the season so far and their challenge at the top shows no sign of losing its impetus as the season approaches its final third as they do a fair imitation of an Astra SRI amongst a field of Reliant Robins.

For not only have Vauxhall won more points than their rivals they have also scored more league goals than any other side, 65 as we go to press.

Other teams in the hunt for the title include the aforementioned Bradford PA , Ashton Utd and Stocksbridge. Bradford have played most games amongst the title contenders but they seem to have weathered a mid-season dip in form. However the Footymad panel of experts forsee further fluctuations in Bradford’s form as the season moves to its climax.

Ashton have been close to promotion to the Premier Division on several occasions in the past and once again find themselves in the challenging pack. Stocksbridge may be eleven points adrift of the leaders but they do have games in hand- two over Vauxhall and four over Bradford.

Fifth placed Chorley seem to have too much ground to make up to catch the leaders, lying twelve points outside the promotion places and having played the same number of fixtures as Park Avenue.

The team Footymad suggest may put together a late season run are Witton Albion who have played fewer fewer games than anyone else in the top half of the table. We feel they are capable of putting together a run of victories to carry them into the thick of the promotion tussle.

Anyway those are Footymad’s contenders for the top two places and after much anguish and deliberation the Footymad prediction team has decided that the top of the table will read as follows after the final whistle has been blown on the season.

Champions- Vauxhall Motors
Runners-up- Ashton United

Bradford PA are the side who will just miss out, finishing 3rd. Witton will enjoy a good run towards the end of the season to enable them to finish in a respectable fourth position. Stocksbridge will end up 5th whilst Chorley will end the season on the fringes of the promotion battle in sixth place.

At first glance the relegation issue would appear to be almost settled with both Congleton T and Radcliffe in dire straits.

However, closer inspection, reveals the fact that both the teams currently in the relegation places have several games in hand over the teams immediately above them.

For this reason the Footymad brethren are prepared to stick their necks out and predict that either Congleton or Radcliffe will escape the drop. Which one it will be you will have to wait a moment to discover.

The situation is so tight in the places above the relgation places that even a team as high as Eastwood must be casting occasional worried glances over their shoulder. Of the teams involved in the basement battle Footymad feel that Guiseley, Kendal and perennial strugglers Gretna are the teams most at risk, other than the bottom two.

So, after a frenzied debate and several bouts of alcohol fuelled fisticuffs, the panel have come to the following conclusion, the team who will end the season propping up the rest of the division will be Congleton T.

Radcliffe, who have gone from championship challengers to relegation fodder inside one season, will somehow find the inspiration to stage a Houdini style escape.

Just who do we think will accompany Congleton through the relegation trapdoor? Well, Guiseley and Gretna will produce an end of season spurt that will cary them to safety and avoid the trip to grass roots oblivion.

Which all means that the Footymad experts are predicting that Kendal Town will be the team who joins Congleton in drinking from the poison chalice of relegation.

Of course you may feel we don’t know what we are talking about, if so don’t hesitate to leave a comment on one of our message boards.
