Top scorers of the day were Ashton United who put Chorley to the sword at Hurst Cross. In a one sided first half Ashton played some delightful football as they roared into a three goal lead. United opened the scoring in the 10th minute through Jamie Miller. Their second was nodded home by Craig Gomersal, who in turn set up Connelly to net the third.
Immediately after the half time break Jeremy Illingworth rifled home a twenty yarder to register Ashton’s fourth. A Danny Mills penalty for Chorley temporarily reduced the deficit before Ashton added three more goals courtesy of Connelly, Hamlet and Gomersal. In amongst the carnage Chorley doubled their tally when Neil Mathews scored with a twenty yard shot.
Long time leaders Vauxhall Motors slipped out of the promotion places for the first time this year after losing to an 88th minute Andy Kissock (pictured)penalty at Radcliffe Borough on a mud heap of a pitch. Osset Town failed to keep pace with the leaders after drawing at home with bottom of the table Congleton Town.
In a match where Ossett missed chance after chance after chance it was Congleton who opened the scoring when Tyrone Fagon netted after a swift breakaway. In the second half Ossett continued to batter at the Bears defence and although they drew level through a Wayne Johnson og they were unable to force a winner.
It was a productive day for most of the teams at the foot of the table as most of them picked up at least a point. Gretna and Kendal Town earned a point each from scoreless draws at Belper Town and Guiseley respectively.
Meanwhile Winsford travelled to Frickley and returned with all three points after edging out the home side in a five goal thriller. Mayers and Lowe put Winsford two goals ahead by the break. Ian Blackstone halved the deficit just after the restart only for Scully to net Winsford’s third. Steve Learoyd notched Farsley’s second minutes later but that proved to be the end of the scoring.
Elsewhere, Matlock and Workington shared four goals at the Causeway whilst Trafford defeated Witton, moving up to the dizzy heights of sixth place as a result.
