A hard fought game at the Horsfall Stadium was finally settled when James Maxwell powered a Dean Calcutt cross into the Steels net to register the only goal of the game.

The remaining fixtures involved teams at the wrong end of the table. Congleton’s chances of avoiding the drop look very remote after their defeat at the hands of Workington. Despite the boost of seeing Workington keeper Kevin Wolfe being dismissed in the 26th minute Congleton were unable to take advantage of their extra man.

It was the Reds who opened the scoring when Glen Murray (pictured)nudged the ball home after meeting a Marc Green cross. The Bears levelled the score in the incident which saw Wolfe’s dismissal and a spot kick awarded. Moments before the interval Congleton struck again with a fine lob over defender Andrew Jones who had taken over between the sticks.

In the second half ten man Workington took the game to Congleton and reaped their reward when firstly a Bears player put through his own goal to level the scores and then Gary Milne nodded the winner to the delight of the home fans.

Elsewhere, Gretna remain in the bottom two after losing their home game against Witton Albion. Eddie Bishop and Brian Pritchard both netted for the away side as they took a two goal lead at the interval. Mark Dobie pulled a goal back for the Scotsmen but it wasn’t enough.

Kendal failed to take advantage of the bottom two’s failures as they to slumped to a loss. Town found themselves two goals behind, courtesy of goals from Ossett’s Gary Brook and Simon Woodhead, before Stuart Darley pulled one back for the strugglers.

Matlock Town won 2-1 at Farsley Celtic courtesy of first half goals from Andy Simpson and Steve Taylor whilst Belper and Harrogate shared the spoils after a 1-1 stalemate.
