Unibond Division One Review- April 3rd

Ashton fell behind to their visitors in the twelfth minute when Leon Wainman fired the Gladiators ahead. Ashton fought back to take the lead through a Chris Gomersal double and appeared to be on the verge of pocketing a welcome three points when Steve Taylor popped up to grab a late equaliser for Matlock.

On Saturday a badly worn pitch allied to a gale force breeze made playing conditions very difficult at Ashby Avenue. Even so Bradford dominated the majority of the play although it wasn’t until the final minute of the first half that Andy Hayward finally gave them the lead. Avenue proceeded to double their advantage in the 70th minute when Calcutt nudged the ball past keeper Daniels from ten yards out.(Bradford goalscorers pictured together)

Bradford looked to have the game won at this point but five minutes later Lincoln halved the deficit when Simon Bird bundled the ball into the Bradford net and with just five minutes left on the clock Lincoln snatched an unlikely equaliser when a Bird free-kick took a huge deflection before finding its way into the Bradford net.

It took a last minute own goal from Farsley’s Lee Connor on Saturday to break the deadlock at Ashton and keep the Robins in a promotion place. Vauxhall remain hot on their heels after they scored the only goal of their clash with lowly Kendal at Rivacre Park.

Elsewhere, Stocksbridge’s promotion chances were severely dented when they surprisingly lost at home to North Ferriby. Trafford’s recent run of victories was halted by Guiseley who left Shawe View with a vital point to aid their fight against relegation.

Of the other struggling sides Workington secured a vital win when they despatched a Radcliffe side playing their fourth game in eight days courtesy of a Barry Irving double

Gretna, in the meantime, returned from Harrogate with an invaluable point after forcing a 2-2 draw and Winsford’s two goal victory over Chorley went a long way towards securing their place in Division One for another season.
