Unibond Division One Review- April 23rd

Despite playing second fiddle to the home side for the opening two thirds of the game it was Bradford who opened the scoring when Andy Maxwell took advantage of two bites of the cherry to slip the ball past David Pierce.

Winsford then proceeded to shoot themselves in the foot when a Quinn cross was headed into his own net by Wes Simpson. By the time Mark Greaves netted a deserved goal for Winsford the match was all but finished.

The fight for second place took another twist as Ashton enjoyed a comfortable victory over Ossett Town at the same time as Vauxhall were stumbling at Guiseley.

The match at Guiseley was delayed for fifteen minutes because of the late arrival of the Vauxhall party and once the game was underway it was some time before proceedings livened up.

The Motormen opened the scoring in the 39th minute when Haddrell netted from a corner with the first on target shot of the game. The second half contained more incident as Guiseley equalised with a goal from substitute Ben Gallagher on the hour mark.

Ashton moved level on points with Vauxhall after their win at Ossett. After a goalless first half Graig Gomersal fired the Robins into the lead with 24 minutes left on the clock.

Gomersal’s second goal was worthy of a much greater stage than Unibond Division One, lobbing the ball over the despairing Ossett keeper from near the half way line. Ashton wrapped up the points when Jamie Miller fired home their third goal of the afternoon with eight minutes left.

At the foot of the table Congleton were relegated following their heavy home defeat at the hands of North Ferriby and will be plying their trade in the North West Trains league next season.

North Ferriby ran in three first half goals, goals scored by Phillips, Thompson and Trotter. Darren France netted a fourth for United before the Bears finally broke their duck when Darren Washington flicked the ball home.

Gretna failed to make the most of home advantage in their relegation clash with Eastwood Town as the Bears’ Andy Todd netted the only goal of the game in the 40th minute to take Eastwood six points clear of the drop zone.

Farsley earned a vital point from their trip to Workington when Lee Connor ended a goalmouth scramble by sliding the ball into the corner of the net.

Earlier in the game Farsley had taken the lead courtesy of a goal from Andy Cygan before the reds hit back to lead thanks to efforts from Barry Irving and Glenn Murray.

Of the other teams on the fringe of the relegation scrap Kendal Town lost by the odd goal in three at Stocksbridge as did Lincoln United at managerless Witton Albion.

Lincoln’s loss came after they had taken the lead against the run of play when Ian Williams lifted the ball over the advancing Greygoose. Witton hit back almost immediately when Simon Daniels headed powerfully home from a corner.

Witton’s winner was netted by Dave Anane who fired home from close range to register his 20th goal of the season.
