Elsewhere the fight for the play-off places went right down to the wire. Stoke had their place wrapped up by the 38th minute of their match against Swindon by which time they had moved into a four goal lead courtesy of efforts from O’Halloran (o.g.), Gunnarsson, Cooke and Kavanagh. O’Halloran reduced the arrears with a goal at the right end but the Potters were able stroll through the second forty-five minutes.
Walsall confirmed their fourth place finish thanks to Brett Angell who hit a second half hat trick as the Saddlers brought Northampton’s campaign to a sorry end.
It was a nail biting afternoon at the J.J.B Stadium as Wigan, needing a win to make certain of their play-off spot, were unable to break the resistance of Danny Wilson’s Bristol City side as the game ended scoreless.
All of which meant that if Bournemouth won at Reading they would snatch sixth post from Wigan’s grasp. The Cherries looked to be in command of proceedings by the half time whistle, by which time they had swept into a 3-1 lead courtesy of two goals from Elliott and Jermain Defoe strike. A Martin Butler effort had kept Reading in the game. The second period saw the wheels come off Bournemouth’s play-off bandwagon as firstly Caskey reduced the deficit to one goal before Forster netted a late equaliser, which resulted in Wigan finishing in that vital sixth spot.
The relegation places were already decided which is probably why Bristol Rovers produced one of their best home performances of the season, hammering Wrexham by four goal to nil. Veteran winger, Mark Walters netted two of the goals the others were credited to Partridge and Ellington.
