How Did We Do?

Looking back to the days when our crystal ball was given some hammer we see that we managed to secure a fifty per cent success rate in predicting the teams who would occupy the top and bottom places.

Starting off at the top with one of our successes we were absolutely correct when we said that Vauxhall Motors would continue to win more games than they lost and so would claim one of the promotion berths.

Where we lost the plot somewhat was with our prediction that Bradford’s challenge would fall by the wayside.

From the moment we said they would finish third Bradford went from strength to strength, running away with the title race to finish ten points clear of runners-up Vauxhall. Sorry about that Bradford fans.( picture from www.bradfordparkavenue.co.uk. shows Bradford players lifting Trophy)

The team we proposed would join Vauxhall in the Unibond Premier was Ashton despite their penchant for finishing in third spot. Unhappily Ashton maintained their almost legendary consistency and claimed third spot once more- for the fifth time in the last nine attempts.

In our earlier piece we suggested that Witton were a team to watch for a late season burst and whilst their form did improve to the extent that they claimed 7th position in the table the most consistent team in the second half of the season was Trafford who enjoyed one of the best runs of form in their recent history.

At the foot of the table we were spot on with our prediction that Congleton would be the side who would finish the season as the strongest side in the league ie the one holding the rest up.

And honestly who in the world could predict that Winsford would make the same administrative error twice in a matter of months to lose six points for fielding ineligible players. Six points that meant that instead of finishing the campaign in the relative obscurity of 16th spot they ended up next to bottom.

Our prediction was that Kendal would be the ones falling through the relegation trapdoor and that was a reasonable, if incorrect, assumption as they did finish just three points in front of Winsford along with Eastwood and Farsley.

On the plus side we did say that and I quote “ Guiseley and Gretna will produce an end of season spurt that will carry them to safety…” and that is exactly what happened.

Overall I think we should be awarded a- could do better- mark but don’t complain too much or we will put your team on our honours forecast at the beginning of next season which will no doubt put the kibosh on their hopes.
