However a surprise dip in their form has allowed the chasing pack to close the gap between them and the chasing pack to a single point.

The Lions succumbed to a play-off chasing Bristol City side on Friday night in an incident and packed and explosive game. The Robins took the lead as early as the fourth minute through Louis Carey (pictured).

Millwall upped the tempo in the second half putting the home side under tremendous pressure. The City defence finally cracked in the 58th minute when Neil Harris converted a spot kick awarded for a foul on Millwall’s leading scorer. After this, things became somewhat heated on the pitch with Tony Thorpe receiving is marching orders for kicking Sean Dyche.

In the 90th minute City’s Peter Beadle and Millwall’s Paul Moody were sent off after indulging in a spot of fisticuffs. There was still time for Neil Harris to join the quartet of shame when he was dismissed for a foul on Carey.

Rotherham’s impressive run continued with a comprehensive win over Bristol Rovers at Millmoor. Richie Barker gave them the lead a minute before the interval and the new signing, Jeff Minton, added a second half double to wrap up the points.

Reading kept their chances of an automatic promotion alive with an excellent win a Wrexham. A Martin Butler brace was just enough to see off the Welshmen’s challenge despite another goal from the prolific Lee Trundle.

With Walsall inactive Stoke had the opportunity to move up to fourth. They squandered the chance however when they lost a five goal thriller against Cambridge. Riza and Wanless put the U’s two goals up by the interval only for Stoke to level matters in two second half minutes through Kavanagh and Dadason. Cambridge then proceeded to stun the home crowd when they snatched a 90th minute winner courtesy of Richardson.

Wigan’s poor run continued when they were held to a draw by Bournemouth despite taking the lead with a McGibbon goal a minute into the second half. Bournemouth’s much sought after centre-half Eddie Howe netted an equaliser in the 68th minute.

Elsewhere, FA Cup heroes Wycombe reproduced some of the Cup form at home in Oldham running out 2-1 winners courtesy of goals from Simpson and Ryan. Bury and Swindon both drew 1-1 at home against Notts County and Swansea respectively. At Gigg lane, Danny Allsop opened the scoring for Notts County with Adrian Littlejohn netting Bury’s leveller three minutes from time.

In the relegation clash at Swindon it was Swansea who opened the scoring when Roberts fired them into a 76th minute lead. An O’Halloran penalty five minutes later saved a point for the Wiltshire side.

On Friday night Colchester earned their second win of the week to ease their relegation fears. They stormed back from falling behind to a Lloyd Owusu goal against Brentford to reply with three goals of their own courtesy of Keith, Stockwell and Duguid.
