After taking the lead in the sixth minute through Quinn, Oxford held the whip hand in a game of fluctuating fortunes. Top scorer Mark Robins(pictured) equalised for Rotherham in the 24th minute before ex West Ham striker Omoyimni fired Oxford back into the lead three minutes later.

A second goal from Onoyimni on the hour mark gave Oxford a two-goal cushion and although Branston netted Rotherham’s second goal only moments later the away side were in something of a pickle.

The flurry of goals continued with Scott restoring Oxford's two goal advantage midway through the half and although an Alan Lee goal reduced the margin between ther sides to a single goal again Rotherham were unable to force an equaliser.

Reading fluffed a chance to make up ground on the top two sides when they succumbed to play-off chasing Bristol City at the Madejski Stadium on Friday night. Despite taking the lead through Morty’s 25 yarder after only 8 minutes Reading were unable to cope with a slick Bristol City side.

City netted a deserved leveller on the stroke of half time when Tony Thorpe registered his 22nd goal of the season. City took the lead eight minutes after the restart when Lee Peacock struck. Readings hopes of a come back were ended midway through the half when the Robins struck again adding a decisive third goal through substitute Matthews.

Walsall returned to form with a vengeance on Saturday with a crushing defeat of cup fighters Wycombe. Pedro Matias’ 42nd minute effort meant the home side were a goal to the good at the interval. After the interval, Walsall soon set about increasing their lead as Matias went on to complete his hat trick with Hall and Leitao adding their names to the scoresheet. Wycombe's sole response was a consolation goal from Lee.

Elsewhere Wigan were unable to break down a stubborn Port Vale side at Vale Park as the game ended goalless, Oldham defeated Northampton by the odd goal in three whilst Notts-County and Peterborough shared six goals at Meadow Lane.

The relegation tussle between Bristol Rovers and Swindon ended scoreless and at Dean Court Jermain Defoe rediscovered his shooting boots to net the only goal of the game against Bury.
