In an end-to-end encounter Swindon twice took the lead but were unable to subdue Rotherham’s fighting sprit. Gary Alexander (2) and Ina Woan netted Swindon’s goals whilst an Alan Reeves OG accounted for Rotherham’s opening goal.
Promotion contenders Walsall and Millwall both drew a blank in their match at the Bescott and this enabled Reading to improve their chances of automatic promotion as they edged out Notts County by the odd goal in three. Butler and Cureton netted for the Royals with Owers replying for County.
A last minute goal from Peter Beagrie meant that Wycombe’s miserable league form continued as Wigan left Adams Park with a morale boosting victory. McCulloch scored Wigan’s opening goal with McCarthy notching a 72nd minute equaliser. Stoke enjoyed a handsome 4-1 victory over relegation threatened Bristol Rovers courtesy of goals from Hansson (2) and Thorne (2).
The other Bristol club were held to a disappointing draw by in-form Port Vale at Ashton Gate after Steve Brooker had fired Vale ahead on the half hour. It wasn’t until the 80th minute that Scot Murray levelled the scores.
At the foot of the table Oxford prolonged their second division status for another week after securing a surprise victory at Northampton courtesy of a Tait goal.
Swansea are another team who are almost certain to be plying their trade in Division Three next season and their three goal drubbing at the hands of Bournemouth pushed them ever nearer the precipice. Hayter, Elliott and Fenney scored the Cherries goals.
Elsewhere Luton were three goals behind at Colchester by the 43rd minute when Skelton converted a penalty. Micky Stockwell had earlier netted two goals as the most productive season of his career goal wise continued. An 84th minute penalty from new signing Steve Howard was Luton’s solitary reply.
The Cambridgeshire derby was decisively settled in favour of Peterborough as the home side netted four goals against one from Cambridge in front of over ten thousand spectators at London Road. The Posh goals, including a burst of three goals in the final eleven minutes, were netted by Forsyth, Green, Farrell and Lee.
The match at Brentford was settled in favour of the Bees by a goal from Powell in the 28th minute.
